Surgery

Our dermatologists perform skin surgery for diagnosis and treatment, from simple biopsies and excisions to advanced closures using flaps and grafts. We focus on safe, effective procedures with the best results for your skin and appearance.

Pre-operative Checklist

  • No need to fast – the procedure is done under local anaesthetic.
  • Take your usual medications unless advised otherwise.
  • Tell your doctor if you are on blood thinners – only stop if instructed by your doctor.
  • Let us know if you have any allergies (to medications, dressings, or local anaesthetic).
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that won’t rub against the surgery site.
  • If you feel anxious, consider arranging someone to drive you to and from the procedure.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a pacemaker or defibrillator (important if electrosurgery is planned).
  • Ask your doctor if hair near the procedure site should be clipped on the morning of surgery.
  • Have a shower, wash your hair, or shave facial hair before the procedure – the site will usually need to stay dry for 48 hours afterwards, and shaving is generally avoided for 1 week if stitches are used.

Post-operative Checklist

  • The procedure site may feel numb for a few hours; use paracetamol if needed once this wears off.
  • Keep the dressing on and dry for 48 hours.
  • After 48 hours, remove the dressing, gently clean the area in the shower with warm soapy water, and apply Vaseline daily or reapply a dressing if preferred.
  • If bleeding occurs, apply firm pressure for 20 minutes. If it continues, contact the practice.
  • Contact the practice if you notice redness, swelling, increasing pain, discharge, or any other concerns (possible infection).
  • Avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting, or exercise for the first few days to reduce the risk of bleeding.
  • If stitches are used, attend your follow-up appointment (usually 1–2 weeks later) for removal.
  • Once the wound has healed, protect the scar from sun exposure (sunscreen or clothing) to reduce scarring.
  • Ask about silicone gels or scar treatments if you’d like to improve the cosmetic outcome.
  • You will be contacted with biopsy results, or they will be discussed at your follow-up.
  • If you have urgent concerns after hours, please follow the practice’s emergency contact instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a skin biopsy?

A skin biopsy is a small procedure to remove a sample of skin so it can be examined under a microscope. It helps us diagnose rashes, growths, or other skin conditions.

How long does the procedure take?

Most biopsies or excisions take only a few minutes.  Excisions and more complex procedures may take 15 minutes or longer depending on the size and technique used.

What are flaps and grafts?

Flaps and grafts are techniques used to repair larger or more complex wounds. A flap uses nearby skin, while a graft moves skin from another area. Both aim for the best cosmetic and functional result.

Are there any risks?

Complications are uncommon but can include infection, scarring, or changes in skin colour. We discuss these with you before any procedure.
